The Caterpillar

The Caterpillar was a circular ride with the cars following a track. The track was undulating meaning it had humps in it. There is a continious string of cars around the entire track. The ride was generally operated quite fast and produced a fair amount of lateral force.

Once the ride was up to speed, a canopy would rotate over the cars to enclose them, plunging the riders into darkness and creating the outside image of a high speed caterpillar. This was quite popular with young couples. While covered, there was usually a fan that blew air up into the cars at one point on each rotation.

The Caterpillar was once a very popular ride found at many amusement parks. The Lakeside Park Caterpillar was likely built by Harry Traver of the Traver Engineering Company in Pensylvannia.

He was also the builder of the airplane ride which he called The Seaplane Deluxe, a variation of his Circle Swing ride. The Seaplane Deluxe used the basic concept of the Circle Swing ride but the passengers travelled in model seaplanes.
