The earliest form of lawn bowling was played over 2000 years ago. It was introduced into Britain around the 12th century. By 1734 it was being played at Port Royal, Nova Scotia. As settlement took place across North America, the sport of lawn bowling took root in many settlements.
Port Dalhousie saw the establishment of a formal club in 1925. The first greens were located on Main Street, in the front yard of 177 Main Street, on lands owned by Alfred Meryon Harris, who was a very public spirited citizen, and his wife Katharine. Mr. Harris for many years flooded his front yard for a children's ice rink and in the summer hosted sporting events on the field. In 1925, the lawn bowling club took up residence on the field, along with establishing a clubhouse. Mr. Harris died on February 21, 1926 and Mrs. Harris allowed the club to continue there for several more years.
In late 1916 Mr. Harris developed part of his 'farm' into a subdivision known as Henley View Estates, which to-day is Verdun Avenue and the lots along that street. When lots were sold off within the subdivision plan, five lots, the existing grounds of the lawn bowling club, were purchased by the Scott sisters. When Mrs. Harris wished to move from 177 Main Street, through the generosity of the Scott sisters, the club relocated the greens to the current site in the early 1930's. The club house building was rolled on logs from its location at 177 Main Street over to its current location, facing the greens on Verdun Avenue. The club has thrived there ever since with nine manicured pitches, the same clubhouse and on site parking for about 20 vehicles. Improvements have been made over the ensuing years with the addition of lighting for evening play, a storage area and washrooms added on to the building and improvements to the pitches with the addition of 'ditches' at the end of the greens.
While the initial club was for males only, females were admitted in the 30's and both male and females of all ages bowl in various types of games. Members compete in tournaments across the Region and the name of the Port Dalhousie Lawn Bowling Club is known far and wide. Members have served in various capacities on the Niagara Frontier Lawn Bowling Association and the Provincial Lawn Bowling committees. Through its history, Club members have won many awards in competitions locally, regionally and provincially. But many members simply like to enjoy the competitions and social contacts of the home club. They compete in ?jitneys? which are friendly social outings held usually twice a week and can be mixed or for same sex members. Usually once a month, the club will host a jitney with a visiting club and in turn attend a jitney at another club once a month, in addition to scheduled tournaments. This gives members who wish to, an opportunity to visit and meet other bowlers from various clubs around the Region. The club has several trophies sponsored by area businesses that are awarded at the club tournaments and to members for season successes. Club membership has fluctuated over the years, but is normally around fifty members.
